Hello guys,
Thank you for watching our Friday Live stream
Today’s topic is Ukrainian food.
Well, what can we tell you about it?
Ukrainian food is very diverse and tasty and it’s hard to prepare. You can’t prepare our food as taco for 7 minutes, you need half an hour or 1-2 hours to cook it.
Almost all our dishes include a lot of ingredients. I think you’ll like it.
For example, on the breakfast we eat:
- Sirniki (one of the favorite dishes. This is cottage cheese with raisins, apricots halves)
- vareniki (it’s dough with some filling. It can be cottage cheese, potato, cabbage)
- you can also find “lenivue vareniki” (it’s very yummy dish, kids absolutely love it. This is cottage cheese, with dough and eggs and sugar)
- zapikanka. You call it a pie but not traditional (again this is cottage cheese with eggs and sugar)
- cottage cheese with fruits and cream soup or yogurt
- blinchiki or pancake. The diffenrence is that ukrainian pancakes are very-very thin dough. We eat it with the condensed milk (sguschenka), cottage cheese, chicken and mushrooms, poppy, Nutella
- omelette with vegetables and bacon. Please mind that we have another bacon. It’s not crispy, it is dry-cured)
- any porridge
As you can see Ukrainian breakfasts are varied and best thing is that our ladies can cook all these dishes at home.
Dear friends, speaking about lunch, Ukrainian people usually have any kind of borsch or soup with bread and sour cream. And I would like to tell you more about a famous Ukrainian soup called Borsch.
This traditional soup, made of beet root and up to 20 other ingredients, is a staple dish in every Ukrainian family. We love our borshch with all the depth of our Ukrainian hearts – hot and cold, fresh and stale, for lunch or for breakfast, as a meal or even as a healing medicine against the winter colds. Every housewife has its own secret version of borshch, and no restaurant trial can ever compete with the real, steaming hot home-made borshch.
Traditionally borshch recipe is a basic stir-fry of grated beet root with tomatoes, added to a generous soup of vegetables – onions, carrots, fresh or pickled cabbage, peppers, and whatever else is available from our house garden.
Zelenyj (Green) Borsch: broth based soup with sorrel and various vegetables, served with chopped hardboiled egg and sour cream.
It may be eaten as a meal itself, but is usually eaten as an appetizer with bread.
Just like borshch, traditional dumplings are also indispensable part of traditional lunch in Ukraine. Conveniently varenyky can be made of the cheapest ingredients available. Dough is a simple mix of flour, water and salt. And stuffing can be anything: from mashed potatoes with mushrooms and fried onions, pickled cabbage, minced meat and even cherries! The sweet version of varenyky is usually served with sour cream and honey, and is a tasty and healthy substitute for the calorie-counting sweets lovers.
We like to finish our lunch with a cup of tea or coffee enjoying the taste of sweet candies and chocolates into the bargain.
